Scholarships: not just pancakes and one late night.

Alright I need to get my first blog up here. I’ve been getting teased by my bro Mick, so here we go, I’m blogging.

For reals though, I just wanted to share my experience on choosing the scholarship winners. It was so awesome to see the caliber of high school students out there. I suck compared to you guys. Seriously. As we went through student after student, profile after profile, day after day it just got harder and harder. We started looking at the profiles for the scholarships on the 1st of June. 25 days later we were still going crazy cause we had so many students that had more than a test score to show. Those 25 days were spent checking and double checking no one slipped through the cracks. We wanted the students that won to embody what Zinch is all about—being more than just a test score. We spent many late nights and weekends trying to get the scholarships out by the 15th. We realized quickly that it wasn’t going to be a reality. There was no way we could choose someone that fast.

We finally narrowed it down to just 36. That’s where IHOP came into play. Mick, Sid and I went through each of these profiles thoroughly. The extra curricular, leadership, awards, z-folio, everything; each of us ranking the profiles, then arguing, ranking again, scribbling notes, erasing, changing, then changing again. ‘Did we miss someone?’ checking through some more profiles. Checking again. It was crazy, we had spent so much time to narrow it down to 36; we didn’t want to make the wrong decisions. We got it down to 13 and hit a gridlock. When it came down to it, we decided we just had to make up a couple new scholarships because we couldn’t make decisions. We ended up giving out 5 more scholarships then we planned on.

I believe a lot of students could have won, but the ones we choose were definitely deserving. They have done so much, and had shown a lot of passion for what they are pursuing. They are all about being themselves and not just a test score. Congrats to you winners, and all you guys that applied are seriously sweet—you all put us through a lot of sleep deprived nights. And thank goodness for Hawaiian time:)

I really admire your hard work and dedication to keep your word! This site is pretty awesome. Thanks for making it!
^____________^

So...,

Did you choose based on who had the most e/c's, or more so those who had maybe a few e/c's but had a lot of leaderchip roles, awards or other indictions of passion for those e/c's?

I'm really glad that you guys are all so dedicated to examine everyone and stick to your promise to not just judge us by our test scores. An unbelievable amount of thanks to you, since almost no one else will do that for us!

How many finalists had you managed to narrow it down to when you sent out those emails saying who was one?

P.S. I'm very honored that you all chose me as a finalist, even though I didn't win! Thank you so much!

Brad:

To answer you Joy: all of the above. It wasn't just based on e/c's, we wanted to see everything from e/c's to leadership and then what you had done with it.

Emily: As Mick mentioned in his earlier blog, to every 10 students that applied, there was one finalist. Thanks for all your support!

mike:

So have the finalists and winners already been notified? and could we reapply next year if we didnt win? and only 1 more question i promise...what is the Z-folio

It's nice to know that you guys go through all that work to pick a Winner.I am impresssed! Keep up the Good work.

I think it's wonderful that you've offered so many opportunities to students based on qualities that extend beyond academic inclination. I will definitely encourage my friends to take part in zinch.

You may not remember, but I met you guys at the FBLA conference in Chicago. (Hang with Zhang?) I wanted to stop by the booth, but everyone had already starting tearing down by the time campaign booths were closed. Anyway, I just wanted to say what I commented above. Hopefully I will be able to work with you through FBLA again. It looked as though you guys made an impact at NLC.

Qichen Zhang:

Hi, you may not remember me, but I pilfered one of the Zinch "I am not a test score" pins at the FBLA NLC exhibit! Well, not really, but I think you tried to speak Mandarin to me. I have a quick question about profiles: when a user shouts out to a college and that specific college goes to the profile, will that college know which other colleges the user shouted out to? Besides that, just wanted to say that I've been browsing zinch.com and it looks pretty impressive and professional. Good luck with future Zinch endeavors!

Hello. I was a finalist for the scholarships, and although I was a bit disappointed I didn't get one, I would still like to say that I highly appreciate what you guys are doing. You put so much time and effort into everything, it's just good to know that there are people out there that are helping us through the hard application process. Also, your guys' idea for this website is new, refreshing, and a great help to high school students trying to get into college. Thank you!

Oh yeah, I forgot, congrats to all the winners! I would do this under the other blog post, but it's got over 40 posts in there, and it would get stuck swimming in the masses of other comments.

Brad:

Good question QiChen. If a college goes to your profile, currently they will not be able to view the other shout-outs made. They will however see the total number of colleges you shouted out to. As we talked to colleges and tried to figure out what is best, we found colleges are curious but it might effect the view towards you the students if they know the specific colleges. As long as you don't have more than 10-12 it won't feel watered down. We would, however, love any feedback you or anyone else has.

Anita:

yeah, i guess we were all deserving, just not deserving enough. haha.
sticking around till the Sweet Diggity Dog scholarship nonetheless.
but gee, thanks for the opportunity! :)

Matthew Berry:

Greetings! I'm Matt, just another guy busy with working a 40+ hour job for fall college money, while trying to maintain my equal ratio of fun. Being so busy, it is not easy for me to be on here too often; however, I wanted to say that I greatly appreciate being a contestant finalist and hope indeed that I receive some help to college through any of the remaining scholarships. I am glad all of those working on this site have put so much time and effort into reading my profile, and now that I have updated it, I hope I have a better chance of winning, along with thousands of other people. Also, it gives me a chance to show my family and friends all of my accomplishments in an organized fashion leaving me without having to e-mail each one of them, and for this I am most happy. Thank you, for making this so easy for people to see, and for all of your help, I am grateful!

karen:

its really awesome to know what you guys do for us. thanks a lot

Christina:

Thank you Zinch for all your dedication and hard work!!! It really does make a difference :)

viking2009:

(viking2009)

Eke! (x___o) First of all, IHOP is awesome, but most importantly, thank you for creating/running this site for all of us. Even if every student doesn't win a scholarship, we can still get colleges to notice us. I just got a college to contact me about more information on their school (and it's actually a college on my top 5 list). Good luck on choosing future scholarship winners and don't forget to enjoy the pancakes! You guys deserve it. *thumbs up*

Tarah Westover:

Hey Brad, I had a quick question, Im working on updating my z-folio, and Im confused on what things I put into them. What are some things that other students do on their z-folio's?

Dana:

Wow!!! I know I'm really, really late in saying anything, but thank you. You're amazing, and you're doing a good thing!!! Thanks!

Sibel:

Thanks for all the hard work you put into this website and the scholarship scouting.. I just applied for the Sweet-diggity-dawg Scholarship. Cool name by the way haha

Anyways, I went to the "A Brighter Life Foundation" website to see what it was about and I noticed you guys are doing a project in Argentina. That means alot to me because I went to school there for a while and i feel inlove with the culture and enviorment. Im planning on going again this summer so could i donate some stuff also?

Keep up the good work = )

San:

Wow you guys are really amazing. Someone should treat you guys to sweets or something haha. Lots of students really appreciate what you do :)

I've never considered myself a candidate for any scholarships, and although this website provides more opportuities than others its still based on leadership, extra-curricular, and community service involvment.

I dont stick out in those areas by far... do I still even have a chance?

I'm glad you guys are so dedicated. It makes me feel good about all the hard work I put into my profile and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Johnnie:

hey thanks for all the hard work and dedication!

Any way to see which colleges use zinch.com to find students?

Blanca Mejia:

wow! its amazing how people can be so dedicated in what they do. Trust me Brad, once you see the difference you have done in each of the winners your dedication is worth it! I am a new member in zinch and I am happy for having the opportunity of being a member now. The dedication and work you and your teammates do encourages me to work harder in my studies, because I know there is someone out there who is working hard for me to have money for an education. I am hoping that I will win a scholarship or maybe more than one. Now I have to let you guys go (i can write forever..lol), because I have to go to work. I just wanted to show my appreciation to the founders of this web site. Thank you!
