Week One: Camp Vandy
I picked my college because of the strength of their program in what I want to major in, because I liked the campus, and because there's a church area that I can go to nearby. I'm really glad now that I chose for those reasons and didn't psych myself out by thinking about the challenges of moving across the country and not knowing anybody. Although it's been challenging socially I'm so glad I came here and feel really privileged to be able to be here.
I was so nervous my first day, but everything worked out. People were a lot nicer and more willing to help than I thought they would be. My roommate has been great. We're pretty similar which is nice. She's fairly quiet but really nice, and she knew people from her high school that go here so she's been able to introduce me to some people which was really helpful the first few days.
I moved in and then went straight to marching band practice. That's been one of my favorite parts of this week. I've been able to meet a lot of people at different times but band is the only place that I see people often to I can actually make friends and get to know them. And of course band people are always really accepting and family like so that makes it easier. The trumpet section is made up of like 25 or 30 people which is amazing. It sounds awesome. The whole band is something over 100 people. I had no idea what I was doing the first day but everyone was really kind and helpful so I've learned most the things I need even though I'm probably not very good at any of it cause I've never marched before. The half time show we've learned so far is called Guitar Hero =) and is made up of a bunch of songs everyone knows which makes it fun for the band and for the fans. On thursday we ran through the show 4 times in a row... and each of the four times only 1/4 of the band played.. it was a competition to see which group could be the best. Then, Mr. Smith, the guy who runs all the marching stuff, tells us that they're starting a new tradition and all the freshman get to march the show alone. It was intimidating but I'm really glad they had us do it because it showed that the freshman are a significant part of the band and really contribute.
