Starting From Scratch
I just deleted my entire (finished!!) application essay...
About two months ago I had come up with what I thought was the most amazing essay topic ever to hit me. Once I came around to writing it, I liked it. Sure. But it didn't feel like me; it was "blah." In all honesty, it felt more like it was simply being crafted for what the admissions committee wanted to read.
It was not until this past Monday, a little less than two weeks before my Early Decision deadline, that fate knocked on my door.
It just so happend that in my Contemporary Literature class, my English teacher assigned us this topic:
Describe someone as they are eating. Describe them physically and describe how they act, what they say/not say, and their mannerisms.
This was only meant to written as an observation paper but instead I created an entire story.
As I was writing this I realized, "Wow, this would make a heck of a good college application essay."
And there you have it.
Despite all the effort I put into coming up with an essay that would please admission officers, I threw it all out at last minute. Honestly, what I just did is crazy. But, it's those risks that make life fun.
Don't be afraid of taking risks, especially during the college admissions process.* Also, don't think about your application too much, just let your ideas flow. Don't worry. Your best ideas come at the most unexpected moments.
Wish me luck! 9 days to go! :O
(I'm freaking out!!)
* This girl was even crazier than I am -- She re-started her application essay from scratch only a few hours before the deadline! Yet, she STILL got accepted to MIT.
